Proposals to create Town Square House, a residential and retail development on the site of the former Aldi supermarket site in the heart of Hythe, have been unveiled.

Property developer In5 Group believe the site, vacant since 2019, offers the opportunity to create retail units, residential apartments, and a new focal point for the centre of the town. This will be achieved through the partial demolition, redevelopment and internal refurbishment of the existing buildings.

In addition to transforming the empty Aldi supermarket and adjoining car park, Town Square House will rejuvenate the Town Square on the High Street in Hythe.

The site of the proposed development sits between the High Street, Bank Street, Mount Street Mews and Prospect Road.

Sam England, Land Director at In5 Group, said: “Hythe has a strong reputation as a centre for family-owned businesses, especially on the High Street. As a result, we have included seven new retail units, with a range of sizes to accommodate the needs of independent retailers or healthcare services.

“By redeveloping and repurposing the existing building we can create 35 one- two- and three-bed apartments, including three affordable apartments around a communal garden space, with private parking. Town Square House will also create a new frontage to Bank Street.”

The existing car parking has been redesigned with 42 public spaces provided, alongside 28 private spaces, with 20 electric vehicle charging points.

Sam England added: “The refurbishment of Town Square is an integral part of the project and offers the opportunity for community events and a place for residents to meet in the centre of Hythe.

“We recognise that Hythe is well served by national supermarket chains, including Aldi, Iceland Foods, Sainsbury’s and Waitrose & Partners. We believe the repurposing of the vacant large retail unit into smaller ones, combined with residential accommodation, will help sustain the town’s local economy.”

In5 Group has created a website and is eager to hear the views of local residents and businesses via www.townsquarehouse.co.uk, before submitting a planning application to Folkestone & Hythe District Council.

Members of the public and local businesses have the opportunity to provide comments on the proposals via the Town Square House website until midnight on Sunday 27 March.

It is hoped that the District Council will be able to make a decision this summer, with the aim of getting construction under way before the end of the year.
